In most contemporary academic systems of the world, secondary schooling consists of the second years of formal training that happen throughout adolescence. It is characterised by transition from the typically obligatory, comprehensive main training for minors to the optionally available, selective tertiary, "post-secondary," or "higher" education (e.g., college, vocational school) for adults. Depending on the system, schools for this period or part of it might be referred to as secondary or high schools, gymnasiums, lyceums, middle colleges, colleges, or vocational schools. The actual boundary between main and secondary schooling varies from country to nation and even within them, but is mostly around the seventh to the tenth 12 months of schooling. In the United States and Canada main and secondary training together are typically referred to as K-12 schooling.
